How do you inspire young Asian Americans on paper?
These interview spreads are from Rice & Spice Magazine's print issues. (Rice & Spice is an online collective of Generation-Z Asian American artists, photographers, writers, and more.) By collecting and designing the submitted words, images, and creations of fellow young Asian American collaborators, the goal of this project was to create and distribute a tangible representation of the power of young Asian creativity and inspire one another to continue telling and uplifting our stories when traditional magazines neglected to do so. These spreads are a few of many I designed that were printed into high-quality magazines, sold, and sent to readers, with 25% of all proceeds going to the Equal Justice Initiative.
To design the interview on the left with Claira Janover, a fearless social media activist, I wanted to focus on a theme of confidence and vulnerability by using a self-made rough handwriting style, crumpled paper textures, and a continuation of red, black, and grey, all to honor her unapologetic, unfiltered voice, the way she frequently shared her journaling online, and how she overcame those who tried to silence her.
To design the interview on the right with Sherry Cola, a queer comedian, actress, and recent voice actor for Pixar's Turning Red, I wanted to highlight her fun, loud, outgoing nature and bring out the colors in her official issue photoshoot.
The spread designs are original, but the unedited photos and writing used are submitted by consenting contributors to Rice & Spice Magazine.
